A Living Room Worth Living In

The majority of the down-time we spend at home is spent in common areas like the kitchen and living room. These rooms need to be comfortable, functional, and stylish in order to give us the best sense of well-being possible. After a long day, there's nothing more satisfying than coming home to a welcoming and calming space we can call our own. There are so many ways to express our individual tastes; from simple paintings and shelving units, mirrors and fabrics, faux stone panels and pops of wall color; the possibilities are endless, and it's truly fun to create new looks and change them over time. Having fun with decorating and style is a great way to express ourselves and make a house feel like a home.

A simple painting or a unique shelf can add depth and dimension to rooms that otherwise look a bit drab and boring. Great artwork doesn't have to be expensive either, you can hang your children's drawings, or projects you've done together to showcase your families special personalities. Have a great family photo? Great! Hang it on the wall and smile every time you walk into the living room. Shelving units can add interest to a room, either because of a unique shape, or the fun items you put atop them. Shelves and what we choose to display on them tend to become conversation pieces in our homes. Display a rock you found on that trip you took to Fiji, or a special bottle of wine you drank on a romantic holiday. Allow your room to tell your story in a fun and interesting way.

Fabrics and mirrors add texture and interest to your living room by creating a feeling of warmth, and openness. Fabrics come in every shape, size, texture and color; find one that suits your desired aesthetic and play with patterns, weight, and draping for minimal, or more dramatic effects. Mirrors of all shapes and sizes can be a beautiful way to reflect light and create a sense of a larger space, especially in rooms with few windows. Alternately, you could hang a variety of decorative polished silver platters, which will reflect light well but will not reflect images clearly.

Faux stone panels and pops of fun paint colors on an otherwise white wall can really add a dramatic flair to a living room. This accent is relatively inexpensive, easy to install, and creates a beautiful look that brings the outdoors in. Using faux stone panels to create an accent wall can make your home feel like your castle (and shouldn't it?). You can add a water feature to bring in an element of calming sound, or leave them as they are for a rustic feel. They come in warm and cool colors, so there's something for everyone. In the same respect, a cleverly painted accent wall can really give you some color therapy at the end of a long day. Use blue and violet tones for a calming effect; reds, yellows, and oranges can give an energizing and revitalizing feel; or use greens to bring the connection with the outdoors inward. Just one simple wall can change the entire feel of the room.

There are so many creative ways to make your living space fun and attractive; the most important tool you have at your disposal is your imagination!
